The Story of the Roundup® Brand
Over 40 years of history behind the #1 brand in weed control.
The year was 1974. Postage stamps cost 10 cents each, the national speed limit dropped to 55 mph, polyester was in vogue, and the original Roundup® product, based on an active ingredient called glyphosate, was introduced.
Considered a breakthrough weed management tool both then and now, glyphosate has become one the world’s most widely used weed killers. Today, it’s approved for use in 160 different countries around the globe.
From people who are meticulous landscape caretakers to families who spend their free time frolicking around the yard, the Roundup® brand has been trusted by generations.
It was the introduction of the earliest Roundup® brand lawn and garden formulation that began helping homeowners to get rid of ugly, invasive weeds without the back-breaking work of having to dig, pull, and tug each one of them. So when it came time for the next generation (and the next) to care for their own landscapes, they, too, relied upon the good ole Roundup® brand.
There’s a simple reason that Roundup® Weed & Grass Killer products have been the go-to for weed control for millions of homeowners for over 40 years: They work.
When glyphosate is applied to a weed, it enters through the plant’s leaves and moves to the root, targeting an enzyme only found in plants. Once the weed withers, any product not absorbed by the plant breaks down without moving in or on to untreated plants.
Over the years, the Roundup® brand hasn’t rested on its laurels. Instead, it has worked hard to bring innovations to customers that make their lives easier. Here are some of the highlights:
1988: Roundup® Ready-To-Use formulation brings the power of Roundup® brand to everyday homeowners via a hand-held spray bottle that makes it instantly easier to control weeds in their own yards.
2005: Roundup® Extended Control Weed & Grass Killer Plus Weed Preventer Products add a powerful weed preventer so consumers can kill weeds and stop new ones from sprouting in one fell swoop.
2008: Roundup® Pump ‘n Go® Sprayer provides a more continuous spray than the traditional trigger sprayer for better coverage.
2013: Roundup® Comfort Wand® with a battery-powered applicator makes it possible to get a continuous spray without having to pump or prime.
2014: Roundup® Max Control 365 Products allow users to apply a combo non-selective weed killer and preventer just once a year and be covered for up to the full 12 months.
2015: Roundup® Extended Wand extends to a full 2 feet (vs. the usual 1 foot) so homeowners have to spend less effort bending and reaching.
2016: Roundup® Sure Shot® Wand adds a cone to the end of the extended wand to make application even more precise, helping protect nearby plants from damage.
2017-2019: Non-glyphosate-based products from Roundup® are introduced, including:
- 2017: For Lawns Products allow homeowners to treat common weeds in their lawns without harming the grass.
- 2018: Roundup® For Lawns Bug Destroyer arrives to help consumers tackle the other major common lawn issue—insects—with all the ease and effectiveness they’ve come to expect from Roundup®. 2018: Roundup® Landscape Weed Preventer puts the focus squarely on preventing pesky weeds in the landscape.
- 2019: Roundup® For Lawns Crabgrass Destroyer effectively tackles one of the most notoriously difficult weeds to kill—late stage crabgrass.
Over 4 decades may have passed, but the Roundup® brand is still hard at work, coming up with more and better innovations, all aimed toward helping homeowners win the war against landscape and lawn invaders. Watch out, weeds!
